The zodiac is a band of sky a few degrees wide around the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun through the year. Tradition divides it into twelve equal parts of 30° each: the signs. Before they were ever "personality types", the signs were the twelve stages of a cycle that starts in spring and returns to it, a symbolic narrative of life being born, growing, relating, maturing and dissolving in order to be reborn.
Signs and constellations are not the same thing
Traditional Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which begins at the point of the spring equinox: 0° Aries always coincides with that moment of the year. The constellations that gave the signs their names, by contrast, have slowly shifted because of the precession of the equinoxes. This is why the sign of Aries today corresponds largely to the constellation of Pisces. It is not a mistake: the tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons, not to the stars. Other traditions, such as the Indian one, use a sidereal zodiac instead.
The cycle of the twelve signs
Each sign has an element (fire, earth, air, water), a quality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) and a ruling planet according to the classical system.
Aries — cardinal fire, Mars
The beginning of spring and of the astrological year. The symbol is the ram breaking through with its horns: impulse, courage, the birth of the self.
Taurus — fixed earth, Venus
Full spring, the earth covering itself with fruit. It represents rootedness, the body, constancy, the pleasure of the senses.
Gemini — mutable air, Mercury
The end of spring, when everything multiplies. The two twins speak of dialogue, curiosity, exchange and duality.
Cancer — cardinal water, Moon
The beginning of summer, the solstice. The crab with its shell symbolises home, protection, family roots and memory.
Leo — fixed fire, Sun
The heart of summer, light at its greatest warmth. The lion is the king: self-expression, generosity, creativity, dignity.
Virgo — mutable earth, Mercury
The time of harvest. The virgin holding the ear of wheat signifies care, discernment, precise work and service.
Libra — cardinal air, Venus
The autumn equinox, when day and night are equal. It is the only sign represented by an object: balance, justice, relationship.
Scorpio — fixed water, Mars
Deep autumn, falling leaves and the earth closing in on itself. It symbolises transformation, intensity, mystery, facing endings.
Sagittarius — mutable fire, Jupiter
The last stretch of autumn. The centaur archer draws his bow towards the distance: the search for meaning, travel, philosophy, faith.
Capricorn — cardinal earth, Saturn
The winter solstice, the longest night. The goat climbing the mountain represents discipline, ambition, structure, responsibility.
Aquarius — fixed air, Saturn
The heart of winter. The water-bearer pours for everyone: community, ideals, independence, vision of the future.
Pisces — mutable water, Jupiter
The end of winter, the cycle closing before it is reborn. The two fish, bound together and facing opposite ways, signify dissolution, compassion, dreaming, spirituality.

Reading the signs with balance
The Sun sign, the one in which the Sun stood at birth, is only one element of a birth chart. Everyone has the Moon, the ascendant and the other planets in different signs: reducing a person to their sign is therefore a simplification. In the reading of Studio Esoterico Cornelio the signs are considered twelve qualities present in every human being, in different proportions, and not boxes that determine character.
A useful exercise is to follow the Sun's passage through the signs over the year, noticing how the quality of each is mirrored in nature: the impulse of Aries in the new shoots, the gathering of Virgo in the fields, the inwardness of Capricorn in the winter nights.
In short
- The signs are twelve 30° sectors along the ecliptic, distinct from the constellations of the same name.
- The tropical zodiac is tied to the seasons and begins at the spring equinox.
- Each sign combines an element, a quality and a traditional ruling planet.
- The sequence of signs symbolically tells the story of a complete life cycle.
- The Sun sign is only part of the birth chart and does not define a person on its own.
