The birth chart is the image of the sky at the moment and place of birth, as seen from the Earth. It is a symbolic photograph: it shows where the planets stood in the zodiac, which sign was rising on the horizon and which was culminating at the midheaven. The word "horoscope" comes from the Greek hōroskopos, "the one who watches the hour", and originally referred precisely to the rising point, the ascendant. This detail already says a great deal: the heart of the chart is not the Sun sign but the precise instant.
The data you need
To cast a birth chart you need three pieces of information:
- the date of birth;
- the time of birth, as precise as possible;
- the place of birth, to obtain latitude and longitude.
The time is decisive. On average the ascendant advances about one degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours, with variations due to latitude and sign. An error of half an hour can shift the ascendant and the house cusps. That is why, when possible, it is best to take the time from an official record rather than from family memory alone.
What a chart contains
A traditional birth chart includes:
- the seven planets, from the Sun to Saturn, and often the lunar nodes;
- the twelve signs in which the planets stand;
- the twelve houses, which indicate the areas of life;
- the angles: ascendant, midheaven, descendant and imum coeli;
- the aspects between the planets.
Many astrologers add the modern planets and other points; those who follow classical tradition concentrate on the elements listed above.
A seven-step path
Faced with a chart, the temptation is to read everything at once and get lost. Tradition suggests an order instead.
1. Day or night?
The first step is to establish the sect: if the Sun is above the horizon the chart is diurnal, if below it is nocturnal. In day charts the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn are considered more at ease; in night charts the Moon, Venus and Mars. This changes the weight of benefics and malefics: Saturn in a day chart is considered less difficult than in a night chart.
2. The ascendant and its lord
The ascendant represents the body, character and starting point. The planet that rules it, called the lord of the ascendant, is a kind of guide to the whole chart: its position by sign and house shows where the person directs their energies.
3. The luminaries
The Sun and the Moon describe life in its conscious dimension and in its emotional and bodily one. You look at the sign, house and aspects of both.
4. The dignities
For each planet you assess whether it is in domicile, exaltation, detriment or fall. This tells you which planets have more resources and which call for more work.
5. The angles
Planets close to the angles, especially the ascendant and midheaven, are the most visible and active in the person's life.
6. The main aspects
You identify the closest relationships, especially those involving the luminaries and the lord of the ascendant.
7. The synthesis
Only at the end do you bring the information together, looking for themes that repeat. If three different indications speak of communication, that is probably an important thread of the chart.
An example of reasoning
Imagine a night chart with the ascendant in Virgo. The lord of the ascendant is Mercury, which stands in the third house in Scorpio. A symbolic reading might emphasise an analytical mind, turned towards study and communication, with a taste for what is hidden and deep. If Mercury receives a trine from Jupiter, this tendency will be supported; if it receives a square from Saturn, it may express itself with effort, but also with rigour. It is an image, not a verdict.
What the chart does not say
The birth chart does not indicate events, dates or fixed destinies with certainty. It describes tendencies, potentials and tensions that express themselves through each person's choices, environment and history. Two people with similar charts can lead very different lives. At Studio Esoterico Cornelio the chart is read as a map: it helps you find your bearings, but the path belongs to the one who walks it.
In short
- The birth chart is the image of the sky at the moment and place of birth.
- You need the date, the precise time and the place; the time determines the ascendant and houses.
- Traditional reading starts from the sect, the ascendant and its lord.
- Dignities, angles and main aspects complete the picture before the synthesis.
- The chart describes tendencies and potentials, not certain events.
