After the Sun and the Moon, Venus is the brightest body in the sky. It never strays far from the Sun, and so it always appears close to dawn or dusk, brilliant and alone. This discreet and radiant presence has made Venus, in almost every culture that observed it, the symbol of beauty, attraction and love.
Morning star, evening star
The earliest Greeks believed these were two different bodies: Phosphoros, "bringer of light", in the morning, and Hesperos, the evening star. The Romans called them Lucifer and Vesper. Only later was it understood that they were the same planet, visible now before sunrise, now after sunset.
This double nature is already a symbol: Venus is the threshold between day and night, between the light that arrives and the light that departs. In tradition, love has precisely this character of passage and of union between opposites.
The eight-year cycle
Venus has a remarkably regular rhythm. About every 584 days it returns to the same position relative to the Sun, and five of these cycles correspond almost exactly to eight Earth years. If you mark on the zodiac the five points where Venus meets the Sun during this period, you obtain a five-pointed figure. This geometry helped link Venus with the number five, the pentagram and the five-petalled rose.
Venus in myth
The Roman Venus corresponds to the Greek Aphrodite, born according to myth from the foam of the sea. But her roots are older: the Mesopotamian goddess Inanna, called Ishtar by the Semitic peoples, was identified with the same planet. The famous tale of her descent into the underworld, through seven gates at each of which she removes one ornament, has been read by many interpreters as an image of Venus disappearing from the sky and returning.
Venus in the astrological system
In traditional astrology Venus is the lesser benefic, temperate, moderately cold and moist, nocturnal and feminine in nature. Its main dignities are:
| Condition | Sign |
|---|---|
| Domicile | Taurus and Libra |
| Exaltation | Pisces |
| Detriment | Scorpio and Aries |
| Fall | Virgo |
In Taurus Venus expresses the sensory dimension, the pleasure of the fruits of the earth; in Libra the relational one, harmony and agreement; in Pisces, where it is exalted, love that gives itself without measure. In Scorpio and Aries, signs of Mars, its gentleness meets intensity and conflict; in Virgo, the spontaneity of feeling has to reckon with analysis.
Venus rules Friday, copper and, in tradition, the colour green. In the planetary hours, the hours of Venus were considered suitable for reconciliation, art and beauty.
Reading Venus in the birth chart
To understand how a person experiences affection and beauty, tradition looks at a few factors.
- The sign of Venus: the style in which one loves and seeks harmony.
- The house of Venus: the area of life where pleasure and beauty are most easily found.
- Aspects to other planets: a link with Saturn may indicate serious, lasting loves but also shyness; one with Jupiter generosity; one with Mars passion.
- The fifth and seventh houses: the first concerns pleasure and children, the second marriage and declared bonds.
- The relationship between Venus and Mars: two complementary principles, attraction and desire, reception and initiative.
None of these factors describes a fixed romantic destiny. Rather, they indicate the tendencies, talents and challenges each person brings to their emotional life.
Venus retrograde
Roughly every nineteen months Venus appears retrograde for about forty days. In a symbolic reading this is a period for reviewing values and bonds, when past matters come back to mind. Electional tradition advised against beginning important unions in this phase, preferring a time when Venus was direct and well placed.
Love as harmony, not possession
The deepest meaning of Venus is harmony: the ability to unite different elements without cancelling them. That is why its lesson is inseparable from respect for the other person's freedom. At Studio Esoterico Cornelio Venus is read as a guide to cultivating beauty in relationships, in self-care and in daily life, and not as a tool for bending other people's feelings.
In short
- Venus is the morning and evening star, a symbol of the threshold and of the union of opposites.
- Five of its synodic cycles correspond to about eight years and trace a five-pointed figure.
- It is the lesser benefic, at home in Taurus and Libra and exalted in Pisces.
- In the birth chart, its sign, house, aspects and relationship with Mars are read.
- Its teaching is harmony that respects freedom, not possession.
