In traditional astrology a planet is not always worth the same. Its ability to express its own nature well depends on the sign it occupies. This principle, called essential dignity, is one of the pillars of classical interpretation and is often neglected in modern astrology. Understanding it means reading the sky as a place where each planet may be a welcome guest, a foreign traveller or an exile.
The image of the house and the guest
Ancient authors used very concrete language. A planet in its domicile is like a lord in his own house: it commands its resources and acts with freedom and dignity. In its exaltation it is like a guest of honour, welcomed and celebrated, even though it is not at home. In detriment, the sign opposite its domicile, it is far from home and without means. In its fall, opposite its exaltation, it is like a person fallen from grace.
The scheme of domiciles
The distribution of domiciles follows an elegant order. The Sun and Moon, the luminaries, rule two neighbouring signs at the heart of summer: Leo and Cancer. From there, moving outward in both directions, the planets are arranged by speed, each with one "solar" sign and one "lunar" sign.
| Planet | Domiciles | Detriments |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aquarius |
| Moon | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra | Scorpio, Aries |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Libra, Taurus |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces | Gemini, Virgo |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius | Cancer, Leo |
The scheme carries a symbolic sense: Saturn, the slowest and coldest planet, rules the signs opposite those of the luminaries, the signs of winter, far from light and warmth.
The exaltations
Each planet also has a sign of exaltation, and tradition even names a precise degree where the exaltation is greatest.
| Planet | Exaltation | Fall |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries (19°) | Libra |
| Moon | Taurus (3°) | Scorpio |
| Mercury | Virgo (15°) | Pisces |
| Venus | Pisces (27°) | Virgo |
| Mars | Capricorn (28°) | Cancer |
| Jupiter | Cancer (15°) | Capricorn |
| Saturn | Libra (21°) | Aries |
Some exaltations are easy to grasp: the Sun is exalted in Aries, when the spring light is growing; Saturn, the planet of measure, is exalted in Libra, the sign of justice. Mars exalted in Capricorn signifies strength made disciplined.
The minor dignities
Besides domicile and exaltation, tradition recognises three minor dignities:
- Triplicity: each element has planets that govern it, different by day and by night.
- Terms or bounds: each sign is divided into five segments of unequal size, assigned to the five non-luminary planets.
- Faces or decans: each sign is divided into three parts of 10°, each ruled by a planet according to the Chaldean order.
William Lilly, in the seventeenth century, proposed a scoring system that became very popular: five points for domicile, four for exaltation, three for triplicity, two for term, one for face; minus five for detriment and minus four for fall. A planet with no essential dignity at its degree is called peregrine, that is, a foreigner.
Reception: planets hosting one another
An important consequence of the dignities is reception. If Venus is in Aries, the domicile of Mars, Mars is said to "receive" Venus: it is her host and shapes the way she acts. If at the same time Mars is in Taurus or Libra, the domiciles of Venus, there is mutual reception: the two planets host each other, and tradition regarded this bond as a form of mutual help, almost an exchange of houses.
How to interpret the dignities
Dignities do not say whether a planet is "good" or "bad", but how far it is able to express its nature coherently.
- Mars in domicile in Aries expresses courage and initiative clearly.
- Mars in detriment in Libra may struggle to show its strength directly, but can learn mediation.
- The Moon in fall in Scorpio suggests intense emotions that ask to be understood rather than suppressed.
At Studio Esoterico Cornelio the dignities are read as an indication of resources and challenges: a debilitated planet is not a sentence, but the place where inner work is most needed and often most fruitful.
In short
- Essential dignities measure a planet's ability to express its nature in a sign.
- Domicile and exaltation strengthen a planet; detriment and fall weaken it.
- The scheme of domiciles starts from the luminaries in Cancer and Leo and proceeds by speed.
- Triplicity, terms and faces are minor dignities; a planet without dignity is peregrine.
- Reception describes how planets host and influence one another.
